State of the world

The bloke who sits next to me just came back from lunch with his mum, she said his dad has now fully retired. He was semi-retired, doing supply teaching of business studies at a high school one day a week. Last week in class he asked one kid to take his ipod out because he’s not allowed to listen in class. The kid insisted he is allowed, so the supply teacher checked with the head teacher. The head teacher confirmed that yes, kids are allowed to listen to ipods in class now.
ARE THEY CRAZY?
!
The school I was teaching at had a strictly no ipod policy, and I can tell you it made teaching a lot harder. Allowing students to use ipods when doing quiet individual tasks, meant that the students actually got on with their own work, with no talking or disruption to the rest of the class. It also meant that the students who needed one on one attention and help could get it without me stopping to quieten everyone, or focus just on behavioural issues. The only instance in which it was not effective (during individual tasks of course) was if people wanted to ’share’ an ipod. That is a big nono.
