What is the noun

I’ve been trying to work out what the noun is for ‘to deface’. To end the sentence ‘We don’t encourage…(the act of defacing) of trees’. The only thing I can think of is defacation, but when you verbalise that, it comes out as something rather different…

Dad’s concise says “defacement” is the noun.
Yes, defacement is correct, and I’m sure I have used it. Probably too many times (it’s the teaching bit that makes it so usable- so many kids defacing desks etc).
